Okay, it is time to stop hiding under a rock.

And it is also time for many of us, who are Olympians to speak out.

Look, the very REAL fact of the matter is that many of us were depressed after the Olympics. Some of us got help. Some of us didn’t. Many of us were depressed and just passed it off as “post olympic blues” or “post olympic depression” but the fact of the matter is this — we were depressed.

I remember having a conversation with a psychologist from the Olympic Training Center. One who was VERY helpful and instrumental in my career and success as a competitor. I spoke with him after the Olympics when I was coaching Taraje Williams-Murray in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. I said, “Doc, the USOC does a GREAT job preparing us for competition with all of the services available, but after we’re done competing, I think that is when we really need to see a sports psychologist the most.”

A simple search on google for “Post Olympic Blues”,”Post Olympic Syndrome” or “Olympian commits suicide” will show you that this is a very real problem.

Without trying to sensationalize this thing or make is “fit for tv” we need to just keep it real and really talk about the Olympics, the sacrifices that we make and how it feels to go to the games and come back home, sometimes empty-handed.

I know that the networks love to show these folks who come home with decoration and medals, but the fact of the matter is that most of us leave the Olympics with nothing but the title of Olympian, past surgeries or an impending date with a surgeon, no money, lots of debt, no ticker tape parade, no job and worse yet, friends, family or a National Governing Body that is usually going to critique your behavior.

Not to mention the heat that you get from the social media once your event, match, meet or game is posted online. The things that people say about something that you committed so much too is just downright hurtful and can often send you over the top.

I’m telling you right now, as an Olympian, that the most irritating question that we get is, “Did you win a gold medal?”

People ask this with no intent of disrespect, but it is very disrespectful and hurtful. Its almost as if what you did and the way you represented your country isn’t worth anything if you did not get a medal.

Sometimes I wish people understood our plight. I think Olympians need an “all access” show like what the UFC does or what the cable networks like HBO and Showtime do with boxing. People need to really see what it is like and how much we sacrifice and how little many of us make in terms of money.

Reading that another judoka committed suicide today was extremely hurtful. Elena Ivashchenko committed suicide today because she fell into a depression after her poor performance at the 2012 Games in London. A few years ago it was believed that Austrian Judoka Claudia Heill also committed suicide due to depression. Claudia won a silver medal in 2004 and placed 5th in 2008 (which, in the sport of judo, means she lost the bronze medal match in the finals).

I was explaining the Olympic process to my students at the University of Central Florida this year in their Introduction to Sports Science class. I told them that when you push the envelope for high performance and expectation monumental things can occur. Some of them GREAT and some of them DISASTROUS. But the person is NEVER, ever the same. Never.

I truly believe that more research, care and attention needs to be paid to this issue. I’ve tried to bring it to the forefront along with my friend, former client and Olympic teammate, Taraje Williams-Murray.

I sincerely hope that the family of Ms. Ivaschenko find relief and comfort in some way during this time.

Dedicated to your Improvement,

Today you continue your training from the one and only Keenan Cornelius.

This is a cool series you can try and the Ezekiel Choke has become one of Keenan’s favorites to use in competition, even from closed guard.

You don’t even need long arms to do this one. The key is passing the lapel
back and forth between your hands: PAY CLOSE ATTENTION!

Click here to watch the Ezekiel Series From Closed Guard –> http://www.tinyurl.com/KeenanCornelius

This is a terrific move and simpler to pull off than most people would think.

Really focus on passing the lapel without the opponent noticing the pass,
because as Keenan will show you on the video, once the hand goes in you
are probably going to be able to finish the choke – it isn’t one that you can
really fight with the chin.

Today’s PHREE video is packed with content: It’s Keenan’s series for finishing the Omaplata, a move that is rarely finished in high level competition, but its one of my favorites for submitting and gaining “top” position.

In this video he shows 3 variations which have made all the difference for him.

Click here to watch the Omaplata Finish Series http://www.tinyurl.com/KeenanCornelius

As you know, up until 2012 Keenan had a fairly mediocre career – certainly in big tournaments. Since the start of last year however he has rarely lost – amassing a record of 230 wins and 1 loss (which was avenged) as of this writing.

The key has been the emphasis on details and finishing the moves he used to miss.

So please, click the link below for instant access to the Omaplata Finish Series. Click here for instant access http://www.tinyurl.com/KeenanCornelius

Hey there…..

If you are a fan of competitive Jiu-Jitsu, you have certainly heard the name
Keenan Cornelius. As a matter of fact he was one of my clients. I served as his strength and conditioning coach along with D’Angelo Kinard who was his primary strength and conditioning coach. I was specifically hired when he and his former Jiujitsu coach challenged doggone near every brown belt on the planet in a “no time limit” gi and no gi tournament which is not only won, but DOMINATED.

He did NOT win because of me. He was winning before I met him and will continue to do so. I had the PLEASURE of working with him and having him place his trust in me to prepare him for success.

Keenan has won his weight class and the open division at every major IBJJF tournament in 2012 at purple belt and he has become, without question, the most dominant brown belt in history.

He basically doesn’t lose.

The funny thing about Keenan however is that he wasn’t always this dominant.
In fact up until 2012 – his sixth year of competition – he hadn’t won much at all
at the big tournaments.

Then something happened: He started winning those matches he used to lose and hitting those moves he used to miss. The changes he made in his technique weren’t huge – big doors swing on small hinges.

To be honest with you, Keenan was introduced to new instructional and training systems from a Coach that had experience training world class competitors and training with Olympians. As all competitors do, Keenan has moved on. As a competitor, you learn as much as you can and then you move on and continue your developmental process.

Keenan is doing something now that he was never willing to do before. He is sharing some of the knowledge, know-how and information that he has learned, developed, and synthesized to become the dominant figure in the sport which he is today.

Today Keenan would like to share with you one specific change that has made all the difference in the world.

You can watch the free video by clicking this link –> http://www.tinyurl.com/KeenanCornelius

In THIS VIDEO Keenan will demonstrate his favorite choke after taking his opponent’s back. It has upped his submission percentage tremendously and he’ll show it to you right now at no charge.
